The Obfuscation of Miriam Goderich
Linda Jordan | Birther Report

This is an old story, a true story, and it goes like this;

Once upon a time, a wannabe author named Barack Obama wrote a bio for Dystel & Goderich 1, his literary agents. In this bio Obama tells the world that he was “born in Kenya” 2 and that he is working on his first book ‘Journeys in Black and White’. That bio was included in a 1991 D & G pamphlet listing authors they represented. The bio remained on the Dystel & Goderich website for sixteen years. It was revised by Obama, or with his approval, three times during that period. Every time the claim he made about being “born in Kenya” was left intact.
Please let this sink in. Over sixteen years Barack Obama confirmed, and confirmed, and confirmed, and confirmed, in his own bio, that he was born in Kenya.
This story deserves repeating until two of the main characters, Miriam Goderich and Jane Dystel 4, are dragged into court, sworn under oath and forced to tell the truth about Barack Obama.

Andrew Breitbart discovered Obama’s bio and published it, posthumously, on May 12, 2012. 5

ABC News and, a liberal “fact checking” website, immediately led the charge to come up with a logical reason why Obama would say he was “born in Kenya”. 6

Their motivation was clear. Obama was up for re-election and they wanted him to win. He had spent the last four years denying that he was born in Kenya so it would look really bad if people found out that he claimed, in his own bio, that he was born in Kenya. Also, being born in Kenya to a father who was never an American citizen would mean that you are not eligible to be a presidential candidate, much less president. 7

Did ABC and Snopes ask the author of the bio, Barack Obama, to explain why he said he was born in Kenya for sixteen years? No. That’s what a real journalist or investigator would have done. Instead they relied on Miriam Goderich, 8 Obama’s literary agent, who concocted a story to “splain” it away.

In an email statement sent to Yahoo News 9, Goderich says she was the one who edited the text of Obama’s bio; "You're undoubtedly aware of the brouhaha stirred up by Breitbart about the erroneous statement in a client list Acton & Dystel published in 1991 (for circulation within the publishing industry only) that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. This was nothing more than a fact checking error by me— an agency assistant at the time," Goderich wrote. "There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more."

Brouhaha indeed. A lowly agency assistant. A simple mistake and nothing more. You silly people.

Let’s break down Goderich’s obfuscation step by step.

Goderich does not say that she wrote the bio. She says she made an “error” while “fact checking” the bio or while fact checking the “correspondence or other communications” submitted by Obama concerning his bio. The information she was “fact checking” came from Barack Obama.

The first obfuscation. It is reasonable to think that she would have checked a submitted bio for typos, punctuation and grammar but she would not have fact checked the details in the bio. The author tells you where they were born, where they went to school, where they grew up, what they’ve accomplished etc. In 1991, why would an editor fact check where Obama said he was born? She wouldn’t. 10

The second obfuscation. Goderich says that in all the information provided to them by Obama, Obama said he was born in Hawaii.
"There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii.

She’s clearly trying to imply that the bio Obama submitted to them said he was “born in Hawaii”. Yet, somehow, when Goderich was “fact checking” Obama’s birthplace for accuracy she decided to change his birthplace from Hawaii to Kenya.
This [“born in Kenya”] was nothing more than a fact checking error by me — an agency assistant at the time,"

Let’s pretend literary agents’ fact check where an author says they were born. How does a “mistake” like this happen? Try and imagine it.

She did not say it was a typo. And even if she did a Hawaii to Kenya typo? No. Maybe a Hawaii to Kawaii typo.

Goderich did not say that Obama submitted his bio, which said he was “born in Hawaii”, but she arbitrarily thought it would sound cooler if it said he was “born in Kenya” so she changed it.

No, she said she fact checked Obama’s birth place and this fact checking led her to change Obama’s bio to say he was “born in Kenya”. The only way fact checking would have caused her to change a fact was if the new information she discovered was correct and what she was fact checking was wrong. So, does Goderich really want us to believe that Obama was born in Kenya? If it was factually correct from 1991 to 2007, then why did she say in 2012 that it was an error? On top of that, we are to believe that Obama never noticed that the birthplace in his bio had been changed, from Hawaii to Kenya, in spite of approving its original publication and three re-visions. Unbelievable. Obama’s bio said he was born in Kenya because he wanted it to say he was born in Kenya.

The third obfuscation. Goderich writes, “You're undoubtedly aware of the brouhaha stirred up by Breitbart about the erroneous statement in a client list Acton & Dystel published in 1991 (for circulation within the publishing industry only) that Barack Obama was born in Kenya.

Pay no attention to Obama saying he was “born in Kenya” because that bio was for circulation within the publishing industry only. Smart people will think it’s cool he was born in Kenya but “you people” were not supposed to know about it.

The fourth obfuscation. Goderick neglects to mention that this “erroneous” born in Kenya “statement” was also published on their website for 16 years and survived three revisions. Obama revised his bio, or approved of its revisal, in 1998, 2005, and 2007. 11  In fact the “born in Kenya” claim was on the Dystel & Goderich website two months after Obama announced that he would run for president.

Pathological liars don’t worry about their lies colliding. They just lie their way out of it. Or get other people to lie for them. Obama had been telling certain people that he had been born in Hawaii for years but, being born in Kenya, was the story he wanted to feed his literary agents. It had served its purpose but now he had a problem. Voters were questioning his citizenship status. It would be bad if this born in Kenya bio was discovered by the public at large. So, between April 3 and April 27, 2007, Obama changed his “born in Kenya” bio, to say that he was “born in Hawaii.” Five years later, when the original bio and the switched birthplace was discovered by Breitbart, Goderich comes out with her cover story.

Closing. How many obfuscations does it take to make you a liar? I think Miriam Goderich is way over the limit. She is lying about Barack Obama’s bio and her involvement with it.

Was Kenya the truth or simply a way for Obama to make himself look cool to uppity intellectuals who hold America in disdain? Was Hawaii the truth? Or a necessary lie in an attempt to be an eligible presidential candidate? You never know with liars. Particularly when they wield power from the White House that stops any independent means of document authentication.

Why would Dystel & Goderich lie for Barack Obama? Perhaps all the post presidency money their company could reap was more important than the truth or their integrity. 12 On the other hand they may have been threatened.

The story Goderich concocted was not a noble effort. At the very least she helped to get a psychopathic liar in to the White House for four more years and at worst she aided and abetted treason. Her partner in crime, Jane Dystel, kept her mouth shut while Goderich lied to cover-up Obama’s long-standing biographical claim that he was born in Kenya.

This was a critical piece of information that goes straight to the heart of Obama’s assertion that he was an eligible presidential candidate. Dystel & Goderich denied voters their right to make an informed decision at the ballot box. They denied Americans their legal right to challenge Obama’s citizenship status based on his own claim to having been born in Kenya.

When Breitbart exposed this biography in 2012 can you imagine how the election could have gone if Dystel and Goderich had told the truth?

Or better yet, imagine a 2007 press conference where Dystel & Goderich could have delivered this statement (they will have to pardon my amateur writing):

“In 1991 Barack Obama represented himself to us as a young author who had been born in Kenya. We took him on as a client and requested he submit a bio to us for publication. The bio he submitted said that he was born in Kenya. For sixteen years we represented him as a Kenyan born author. In 2007 Barack Obama contacted us and instructed us to change his bio to say that he was born in Hawaii. When we asked why, given the fact that he told us he was born in Kenya and had also written that he was born in Kenya, he said that was not our concern and to just do it if we didn’t want any trouble. We were aware that red flags had recently been raised about his citizenship status and eligibility to be a presidential candidate. We determined that we could not keep this information about his claim to have been born in Kenya private or hidden and that if we changed the bio to say he was born in Hawaii we would be participating in a campaign of dishonesty, deceit and perhaps election fraud……”

Dream on. We know they chose the low road. Dystel & Goderich engaged in a fraudulent misrepresentation in 2012 when they said Obama’s “born in Kenya” bio was the result of a “fact checking error”. When Obama’s bio was changed in 2007, after sixteen years, to say he was born in Hawaii and not Kenya, they altered, or allowed, a written instrument to be altered, on their website, with the intent to deceive.

Someday Miriam Goderich and Jane Dystel will be in a courtroom, sworn under oath and forced to tell the truth about the bio Barack Obama submitted to them or perjure themselves.

Formerly Acton & Dystel.

Let’s get this fact straight right off. The standard practice is that authors write their own bios and they submit said bio to their literary agent, editor or publisher. Acton, in an effort to cover-up Obama’s Kenya bio, told Breitbart the opposite, that most authors do not write their bio but they do approve of the final copy. This is in direct contradiction with the industry standard and with Dystel & Goderich.
Look on the Dystel & Goderich website where they instruct would be authors to include a biography when they submit a query letter or book proposal to them. Specifically, they say, if it’s a non-fiction book proposal, like the one Obama submitted, the bio they write should take a more “narrative” approach. I repeat, authors as a standard rule, write their own bio. But, to appease obots, let’s say Obama was too lazy to physically write his own bio (he’s barely worked a day in his life) or he was too stupid to write it (have you heard him speak without a teleprompter?) or he was just too important to write it (he is a narcissist after all) he still had to communicate the details of his bio to his agent and he would have had to sign off on the final product. So, either way, if Obama wrote it or if his agent wrote it based on information he supplied her, Obama’s bio said he was born in Kenya because Obama wanted it to say he was born in Kenya because he was claiming that he was born in Kenya.

Goderich became a partner at the agency in 1995.

Of course, in hindsight, everything Obama said about himself should have been fact checked. But, until you know you are dealing with a pathological liar, you would not fact check what an author writes about himself in his bio. And, it turns out, that Kenya may be closer to the truth than Hawaii.

Breitbart did a fantastic job of peeling back this lie. In 1991 Barack Obama’s literary agent, Dystel & Goderich (formerly Acton & Dystel), published a catalogue of the authors they represented. Barack Obama was listed as one of them. The short bio that accompanied Obama’s head shot said that he was “born in Kenya ….raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.”

Author Steve Bowman, who was involved with the same literary agent in the mid 90’s, says that he was instructed by the Dystel & Goderich agent to write his own narrative bio and to write it in the third person. And of course that makes sense.

So in 1991 Obama writes his own bio for his literary agent and says that he was “born in Kenya…raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.” Screen shots in 1998, 2005 and 2007 show that Obama’s biography was updated, edited, on the Dystel & Goderich website without changing the “born in Kenya” claim. The first time it was edited to include the title of his latest book, “Dreams From My Father” and to add that he was also raised in Chicago. (1998 screen catch) The second time it was updated to say that he was now a “junior Democratic senator from Illinois” and that he was the “dynamic keynote speaker at the 2004 Democratic National Convention”. (February 2005 screen catch) The third time it was updated with a modified text change but no new or changed information was added. (April 2007 screen catch)

Through every single edit over a period of 16 years, the “born in Kenya” was left intact every time. In fact, on April 3, 2007, two months after announcing that he would run for president , the “born in Kenya” was still in Obama’s bio on the Dystel & Goderich website.

Between April 3 and April 21, 2007 someone in Obama’s campaign, David Axelrod? Valerie Jarrett? or Obama himself, realized that being “born in Kenya” did not serve his desire to be President of the United States of America like it served his desire to be an exotic, foreign born author. So Obama’s bio, on the Dystel & Goderich website, was edited for the fourth time to say that he was, “born in Hawaii”.

You can find copies of the original Dystel & Goderich catalogue and caches of the website at Breitbart. Read more at

Obama is currently listed as one of their authors. “BARACK OBAMA is the 44th President of the United States. He is also the author of the New York Times bestseller DREAMS FROM MY FATHER: A STORY OF RACE AND INHERITANCE.”
